Evaluating online material requires a few deliberate habits that help separate evidence from assertion.
Start with the source
First, identify who produced the content. A named author, recognized institution, professional organization, or established publication provides more accountability than an anonymous page. Check the author’s qualifications when the subject involves medicine, law, finance, science, or another specialized field. Credentials do not make every claim correct, but they offer useful context about expertise and responsibility.
It is also worth examining the website’s purpose. Some pages aim to inform, while others are designed to sell products, collect personal data, attract advertising traffic, or persuade readers politically. A source can still contain accurate information while serving a commercial or ideological purpose, but readers should understand that purpose before accepting its conclusions.
Check the evidence and date
Reliable claims are usually supported by identifiable evidence. Look for links to original studies, official statistics, public records, or direct statements from qualified sources. A long list of references is not enough if the citations do not actually support the argument. Follow the most important references and see whether the original material says what the page claims.

Images and videos require similar caution because old material can be presented as current, and edited clips can change the apparent meaning of an event.
Pause before sharing
Emotional reactions are often part of the design of misleading content. Sensational headlines, urgent warnings, extreme language, and pressure to share immediately should prompt a pause rather than an instant response. Read beyond the headline, check the publication date, and identify the strongest available evidence.
Online verification is not about demanding perfect certainty from every source. It is about matching confidence to the quality of the evidence. By examining authorship, purpose, supporting material, dates, links, and independent confirmation, readers can make better judgments and reduce the spread of claims that have not earned their trust.
